Roo, a 7-month-old Chihuahua who calls Rancho Cordova home, was the subject of a dognapping in Folsom Saturday, a release from the Folsom Police Department reported today.
The puppy, who was wearing a collar and had a microchip, wandered away from its owner’s vehicle at a 76 gas station on Iron Point Road, the release said. Owner Britney Parkerton, 19, noticed her dog was missing and called police; soon after her report, however, she allegedly received a phone call from a man who claimed to have Roo in his custody.
The man allegedly demanded $200 for the safe return of the puppy. Parkerton informed police of the demand for money, and police then called the man to arrange a pick-up and the exchange of $600 in cash. More than three hours after Roo disappeared, the suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Oakland resident Adonison Gunther, and accomplice Marisa Jackson, 21 and of Elk Grove, allegedly arrived at the meeting location in a black Camaro and exchanged the puppy for money.
Gunther and Jackson were taken into custody and were being held on suspicion of extortion, conspiracy and possession of stolen property at the Sacramento County Jail. Gunther was released from custody on April 25; Jackson was released earlier today.
