SNOQUALMIE PASS, Wash. – Searchers say a hiker found dead Wednesday morning apparently fell 250 feet down a cliff during a late night hike.
Peter Choi, 38, was reported missing by his sister Tuesday night after he failed to return from a one-night camping trip. He was camping alone with his dog.
The man’s loyal dog was found sitting next to him.
The King County Sheriff’s Office says the man left Monday for an overnight camping trip at Mason Lake. When he didn’t return home Tuesday, his family called the sheriff’s office.
Deputies began their search at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. The man’s car was found at the Ira Spring Trailhead.
About 4 hours later, his body was discovered. Deputies believe he went out for a night hike off the trail, took a wrong turn and fell off the cliff.
When searchers found his body, his dog was sitting by his side.
KING 5 News has confirmed the hiker was also a doctor who was seriously injured in a racially motivated attack two years ago.
Dr. Peter Choi was beaten into a coma as he left a Belltown restaurant with his girlfriend.
At the time Choi was a surgical resident with the University of Washington and worked at Harborview Medical Center.
