Ryce has been making great progress. We walked by two dogs today and he managed to trot on by without arguing with me at all. At the light rail station, we found some kind of animal scurrying through the bush, Ryce became very excited and wanted to go after it, but he relented right away when he was told to “let it go”.
He gets so excited when we first take off for our walk that he grabs the leash; it’s cute but I am trying to break him of it. If I let him get away with things because of his cuteness, he’d be dragging me down the street most of the time.
Although I’ve been working with him on barking at strangers, I was glad today that he is so alert because this really creepy guy was walking really slow behind us. Ryce did not bark, but he did keep looking back over his shoulder at the guy, who eventually stopped following us and crossed the street. This is really good behavior to encourage, because even though we don’t want a dog that actively lunges at or barks at strangers, a good watchdog is always alert of his surroundings and keeps an eye out for any potential danger. Notice I say “watchdog”, his job is to watch, not to enforce, and not to guard. With a big strong boy like Ryce, watching is all that is needed to make would-be criminals think twice. I don’t think we were ever in any danger, but I’m glad that the guy didn’t come any closer all the same.
