As I’m adding content to Chako’s forum under the “Animal Attack” heading, I can’t help but notice – dogs on leashes are rarely (if ever) the subject of maulings and attacks.
It really doesn’t matter what kind of dog one has or has vicious it may be, if the owner properly contains the animal, it can’t hurt others. Period. Point. Blank.
Now my own dog is not all that trustworthy around smaller animals, such as cats. Still, I regularly walk him in residential neighborhoods where cats are often sitting on lawns, running across the street, lying in wait under cars. I can say with 100% certainty that he has never harmed a cat in these situations. How is that possible? He is leashed. At all times, my dog is on a leash when he is not either in my home or in his own fenced backyard (where I am also out with him 95% of the time).
To some, this is a wacky idea. A leash? Are you serious?
Dead serious. A simple leash, a simple leather leash can be had for around $14.00. I prefer leather because it won’t burn your hands if your dog tries to bolt or pulls; nylon and other materials will give you a nasty burn.
I suppose there is the slim possibility that a random ninja cat will come running towards me and jump on my dog, removing his heart through his chest and severing my spinal column. I get that, it could happen. In that instance, neither my sad little leash nor Chuck Norris himself could help, I’m sure.
It’s just mind boggling how much time and effort is wasted by lawmakers coming up with new “ideas” to stop this “dangerous dog problem” when the laws to protect us are already written.
How about enforcing what is already there?
I used to live near Southside Park over on 8th and T. Let me tell you, people think they can come to the park and let their dog loose. I feel for them, honestly I do, because they can’t seem to comprehend those simple little illustrated signs telling them that their dogs should be leashed. I’m willing to bet those people also park in handicapped spaces. They probably take a handful of candy on Halloween when the sign clearly states to take only one. I wouldn’t be surprised to find some of them steal their neighbor’s Sunday paper. Sad.
Here’s another thought: licensing laws. Are you aware that you are legally bound to have your dog registered and licensed with the City (if in City limits) or the County?
People that are responsible with their pets don’t end up as news headlines for having pets that attack. Was Sandra Herold responsible? No. She had prior incidents. It wasn’t until her friend had her face removed that it all became clear that something needed to be done. True, in that case we are talking a chimp and not a domestic dog but the same logic applies.
Properly contain and restrain and no one gets hurt.
